A few peeks

Here’s a few moments I’ve caught on camera in the last week! Enjoy!

M was really excited about her cake. We used “cake tatoos” from Chef Duff’s new cake goodies sold at Michael’s. They are pretty…but tricky to use. I tore every piece. Fondant was much easier!
What a cutie my nephew is! He’s having a lot of fun with his cousins, I think. Little Man is having a ball crawling around with J, almost like they’re chasing each other. They’re so fun to watch together! (that is, when they’re not fighting over toys. Little Man thinks everything is his, and J knows everything is his…so you can imagine how it goes!)
The Comedian couldn’t wait to get in and splash, too…but then he didn’t like the cold water! I can’t believe he’s 7 months old already…
Well, that was {not} fun

Some days start out fairly normal, then end like a train-wreck. Oh wait, today didn’t even start normal. It started with too few hours of sleep because both boys were up, then started with both boys screaming at the top of their lungs.
From there it actually did improve (though in our haste to get out the door, forgot one of T’s books that was supposed to be returned today), and I thought that even though I was overly exhausted, today would be better than yesterday and without the shenanigans of Sunday (think angry child who gets herself locked into a bathroom that has very very old locks and doorknobs…). We spent the morning sitting outside, just watching the lumberjacks cut down the huge tree in the corner of our yard, and regardless of how much I disagree with it coming down, it was nice to just sit outside and not have to blow bubbles for 2 hours.
I guess I should qualify the above by saying that the day improved only because the girls weren’t also screaming at me, and the boys stopped.
The rest? Well, here is the rest. The Little Comedian wasn’t feeling so funny since his nap was interrupted by the noise of chainsaws. The towering tree–which was healthy–was coming down and leaving a huge void in the yard. Said tree was also home to a crow’s nest and two tiny baby crows, probably orphaned because their tree is gone and mama crow was sadly flying around in circles searching for her tree and babies.
The afternoon was mild…at the start. The girls colored, Little Man took a nap, and I sat nursing the still-not-so-funny Comedian while reading a few magazines. Then Little Man and the Comedian took a bath, splashed around quite a bit, came out feeling fine and fresh…
For a reason I can’t even remember, I knocked on the girls’ door. They had been playing and laughing behind closed doors, and locked it. You’d think a little one would have learned her lesson not to lock doors anymore…but that’s not the point. T came running to the door crying and yelling, opened it, and I see her.
I see her dripping blood from her mouth, all over her hand, her jammies, the floor. She’s screaming. As any mother knows, head wounds bleed like crazy. Her mouth was filling (so it seemed) with blood and I had no idea from where. All in a matter of a split second, I saw her, put the Comedian down (who now was part of a tragic comedy and didn’t like it one bit, starting to scream himself), and rushed her to the bathroom. I yelled for M, mostly to fill me in on what happened. Knowing T, I figured it’d be a looooooooong time before she was ready to talk after trauma. M refused. I yelled again, and again, meanwhile running cold water on a washcloth to put on T’s mouth. It was her lip. It was fat, split on both side–in and out. Shock of all, T told me what happened. M threw a doll at her. No wonder she wouldn’t come; she knew she screwed up and didn’t want to face the fury.
Little Man was screaming now with all the other screaming, and running around naked still. M was pouting in her room. T was freaking out every time she looked in the mirror at her fat lip. I was freaking out about who to call, and whether or not I’d have to haul everyone in to the ER for T to get stitches. I’m wondering if I should try to get the blood out of the carpet right away or not, and whether or not I’d just end up calling a carpet cleaner.
It was great. Great for building patience. Lord, I’m not even praying for patience anymore. I don’t need this patience-buidling bootcamp. What are you setting me up for?! I’d like a break. Please.
Anyway. Thank goodness I was cooking beans in the crock-pot, and they were ready. Oh yeah, baby. Homemade refried beans are great. The girls loved them, too. I served some up for us, topped it with cheese, pulled out the Fritos…and made myself a margarita. Yup. Another first. Fence has always made them before because I never went to the trouble. Well, today was worth the trouble. And it was good. If I was any better at food photography, I’d have a photo to show for my dinner. But I’m not, and since the photos look like the food styling of the 60s and 70s (totally unappetizing in my mind), I’m going to delete them all. But just imagine a bowl full of amazing refried beans, covered in gooey cheese, just like the kind you’d find at a favorite Mexican restaurant, with a margarita to the side. Thank goodness for a good dinner. The kids are all back to normal now and enjoying a sword-fight and chase around the house. I’m hoping for a quieter and boring Wednesday.
An Apple a Day…
April 24, 2010 by Mama Fence · 2 Comments
I was just chatting via email today with some online friends, who all have babies similar in age to S. We were sharing when we plan to start offering solid food to our little tykes. I said I was actually leaning towards not offering until he was really grabbing for food, hoping this day wouldn’t come for at least another month.
Well, that’s what I get for thinking, as Fence would say.
Sure enough, S decided to show me what he thought of that plan.
Yes, that is a full apple in his hands. His brother was munching on it, and left it on the corner of the table. S decided to reach for it, and eventually (with his sister’s help), grabbed it. It wasn’t long before he was licking it, and sucking the juices out of the bite marks left by Little Man.
mmmmmm….{sthuck sthuck sthuck}….
This is my NOT YET 5 months old baby boy. Loving an apple.
Ah, well…he does have to grow up and eat one of these days. I’m still not going to offer anything…I really like the no-hassle, no-prep, small-mess-if-any kind of feeding that comes with breastfeeding. There’s no hurry to get out the spoons and pureed food yet!
Happy Easter!

It’s been a week since I posted, I know. I stayed away from the internet and the computer as much as I could for Holy Week, and it was really good for all of us. The house felt a bit more manageable, the kids and I had more time outside (partly due to the awesome weather we’ve had!), and we read more stories! T is reading like a superstar now that she’s gained some confidence. The other night she read 12 pages with very little help in her little children’s Bible. The girl is seriously amazing.
I’ve had just enough time to get one photo ready for sharing. It’s of our Easter cake. A few weeks ago I saw an idea for a layered colored cake cut into the shape of an egg. M loved it, so we did it! She chose lemon strawberry for the flavor. With my mom’s advice, we did jello cakes for the flavor and color. They turned out awesome! Great texture, moistness, and flavor. Then I made a marshmallow buttercream frosting. YUM. Once it was done, I decided we’d decorate it like these gorgeous sugar eggs. T donated one of her Peeps for the decorating, and all three older kiddos helped with the sprinkles. I really like how it turned out! Fence took pics while we decorated.
Paella, a first try
March 26, 2010 by Mama Fence · 1 Comment
A month or so back, Fence and I were watching “Throwdown with Bobby Flay”. The episode was challenge on who could cook the best paella. It looked so good, and so easy. I added it to my next month’s menu.
Along came this week, and it was paella night already! Not interested in buying clams and mussels which I knew I wouldn’t eat, I bought canned clams for the dish. I also used chicken and shrimp. When the store I went to didn’t have chorizo, I decided to skip it. After all, it is Lent and I have been trying to spend less on frivolous meal items. It did cross my mind that I should have save paella night for after Easter (clams are frivolous, ya know)…but I didn’t. So I made it the other night, and it was easy. Needed more spice for my tastes; it just seemed a little bland. Fence said more saffron should have gone in it, and we both decided the chorizo would have really kicked it up (ha, I say that not ever having had chorizo, but I am pretty sure it would have spiced things up). Ok, I know saffron is crazy expensive and also fits the “frivolous” bill, but I already had it on hand.
Will I make it again? Maybe. Maybe not. Might have to watch the “Throwdown” episode again to get the craving for it. Otherwise, I just may use some of the cooking techniques and make something up. I really like how the rice cooked in the pan with other food. Cool trick.
